TextMate has always billed itself as the missing editor and now it truly is gone missing. I knew a couple of guys who bought Macbooks so they could use TextMate. Even I paid cold, hard cash for it. Though TextMate could never replace Vim, I used it frequently to open downloaded Python, Ruby, and PHP scripts submitted by my students. I hope that Allan Odgaard made some money on this…
The speculation is that Apple’s App Store policies have created onerous restrictions that impinge on user and developer freedom, and some developers are bailing out. I can’t imagine that anyone making big money would give up on the Mac Cash Cow, but if you’re one of those who feel that OS X (and Windows) are cutting off your air supply, there are excellent alternatives available if you take the time to look around a little.
